Pet insurer to cover medical bills for heroic Kei

The Lamont family are breathing a sigh of relief following dotsure.co.za offer to pay Kei medical expenses.

Following the heroic story of Kei, the two-year-old Belgian Malinois-cross who was shot in the face while trying to protect her family during a house robbery, pet insurer dotsure.co.za has pledged to pay an amount of R60 000 towards Kei’s reconstructive surgery.

According to the pet insurance, it was moved by Kei’s love and devotion that they saw it fit to settle the veterinary hospital bills for several procedures and reconstructive surgery that the pet will undergo.

Kei got injured when she was shot in the face by an intruder who stormed the Lamont family home in Lakefield, Benoni in the early hours of October 3.

During the house robbery, one of the suspects and the family’s beloved five-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Holly, were shot and killed.

David Roache, dotsure.co.za COO, said: “When we heard about the ordeal the Lamont family went through as well as Kei’s brave actions to save them, despite her serious injuries, we simply could not stand back – we knew we needed to step in and help. We are a caring brand, and we know that pets are more than animals they’re family. We’re deeply moved by this little dog’s heroism. The Lamonts have been part of our pet insurance family since 2017 and because we care about our family, we felt that the least we can do is to foot the bill for Kei’s care.”

Dog owner Sarah Lamont said dotsure.co.za contacted them on October 13 to let them know about the exciting news.

“As a family, we are so grateful. What we went through as a family was traumatic but with the support that we’ve received, it has turned into a happy ending. Each day we are getting better and stronger while celebrating Holly’s life.”

Lamont added that when all Kei’s medical bills are settled, all the remaining BackaBuddy funds will be donated to the Boksburg SPCA in honour of Holly.

A case of murder and house robbery is being investigated by the Benoni SAPS.
