Primary school teachers receive training on Scripted Lesson Plans

"Teen pregnancy remains a barrier to educational success as some of our young girls leave the system never to return, increasing dropouts and putting pressure on an already burdened youth."

The Department of Basic Education (DBE), in partnership with USAID and the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), has identified 56 quintiles 1 – 3 schools in the City of Johannesburg Region G, in the Johannesburg South Education District in Gauteng for the full implementation of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in a Government to Government (G2G) agreement.

The District has 37 primary schools and 19 secondary schools with 48,314 learners in Grades 4 to 12. This G2G programme implementation is aimed at capacitating and strengthening the implementation of CSE in these schools and to ensure that teachers have the necessary support for teaching CSE in the classroom.

The DBE developed Scripted Lessons Plans (SLPs) for Grades 4 to 12 through a collaborative and consultative process, including a writing team of curriculum and sexuality education experts, as well as a review team from the DBE and provincial structures.

The SLPs are designed to assist teachers to teach SE within the CAPS Life Skills and Life Orientation curricula in the classroom. Appropriate Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM) will be used to guide teachers and ensure that engagement with learners on CSE is age-appropriate and relevant to each grade.

The training workshop, which was targeted at Life skills and Life Orientation Educators and Heads of Departments (HoDs) in the Intermediate, Senior and Further Education and Training FET phases took place at Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre in Benoni took place from 15 to 17 September 2021.

The 3-day training was geared towards building the teaching capacity of educators by strengthening the knowledge, skills and comfort levels required to teach CSE using SLPs. Teachers were guided and assisted on the provision of content, effective teaching methods and tools for measuring what learners have absorbed.

The department briefed the Basic Education Portfolio Committee on 7 September 2021, following recent reports on the scourge of teen pregnancies amongst children of school-going age.

Director-General, Mr Mathanzima Mweli, told the committee that, “teen pregnancy remains a barrier to educational success as some of our young girls leave the system never to return, increasing dropouts and putting pressure on an already burdened youth.”

The DBE gave a commitment to the Portfolio Committee that at the school level, leaders and management teams are capacitated to ensure that they too are able to support the teaching and learning of CSE to ensure its successful implementation. The next round of training was on 20-23 September for the high school educators.
