Boksburg SPCA initiates an anti-dogfighting campaign

Chains were also removed from the necks of the dogs during the Boksburg SPCA's anti-dogfighting campaign.

Following numerous complaints of dogfighting received from concerned members of the public in Reiger Park, the Boksburg SPCA embarked on a campaign to educate the community about the illegalities of such an act.

According to the SPCA, dogfighting is the premeditated and cruel practice of encouraging and inciting dogs to attack each other until one of the dogs is either killed or is too injured and exhausted to continue fighting.
On September 15, the Boksburg SPCA inspectorate team headed out to Reiger Park where they set up a service station.
Word got around and slowly the dog owners found their way to the SPCA station. After educating them about dogfighting, pet food, blankets, parasite remedies, bowls and harnesses were distributed.

According to the Boksburg SPCA manager, Vicky Finnemore, children learn to fight their animals at an early age after learning from older siblings.

“Unfortunately, these young minds don’t often realise the cruelty and suffering involved. To them, dogfighting is more of entertainment or a ‘sport’.”

The Boksburg SPCA is urging the community to contribute to this campaign by honouring their wish list.

Wish list
• Three large plastic baths (to dip animals in)
• 50 dog harnesses – 25 large, 25 XL (the pit bulls need harnesses as collars aren’t strong enough to hold them)

• Hand-held loudspeaker
• Three plastic jugs
• Empty 2l bottles
• Bags of adult and puppy dog food
• Printing assistance (printing of educational flyers and banners)
