Advertiser’s Winter Wool Drive receives boost from elderly home

The drive remains open for donations of wool, knitting needles and knitted items until the end of August.

Yvonne Pohl (86) of Cosmos Old Age Home has for the past nine years dedicated her time and energy to knitting items for the less privileged.

With the help of other elderly residents at the home, they have recently donated about 150 knitted beanies, baby jerseys and other items towards the Advertiser’s Winter Wool Drive. The donation also included tons of knitting needles.

Yvonne said she divides some of the wool with her fellow residents who assist her to knit with the aim of making a difference in the lives of others.

They have so far reached out to a local Methodist Church’s soup kitchen beneficiaries and to babies at the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

“Out of the goodness of our hearts, we try to help as many people as we can. Knitting also keeps us busy and calm.”

The resident said every month she spends about R500 on wool and other knitting materials.

Yvonne Pohl has been knitting for the past nine years.

“Since I started knitting, I buy the wool out of my own pocket. As wool is very expensive these days, it makes it hard for me to buy lots of wool in order to cater for more people; hence, I would appreciate it if the public can donate to us wool so we can continue knitting.”

Anyone wishing to donate wool to Yvonne and her fellow residents can phone 011 915 5416; drop-offs are also appreciated.

The drive remains open for donations of wool, knitting needles and knitted items until the end of August.
