Blind bowler takes to the greens … at home

“Never say ‘I can’t’! There is always a way - often not what we call normal, but there is always a way.”

The country being placed back into level four lockdown has led to the disruption of sports as a whole once again.

Bowls is one of the sports impacted, which is why Beppie Summersgill, a blind bowler, and her partner and director, Cedric, decided to not let it get to them and they continue playing, training and practising the sport they love from the safety and comfort of their own garden in Airfield.

“Cedric and I have been practising bowls in our garden since the lockdowns first began last year,” said Beppie.
“Every time the greens close, we just practise in our garden.

“We use our outdoor welcome mat as the starting mat and we have two yoghurt lids pinned to the ground with a nail as our point of aim.”

Their coach, Annatjie van Rooyen, told them the length of the garden, the uneven surface and leaves did not matter.
“It is all about practising our deliveries,” said Beppie.

“Annatjie has even been able to correct faults by analysing WhatsApp videos we have sent from time to time.
