Sanca Horizon has been helping for 60 years

The majority of the patients at Sanca Horizon Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centre engage in substance abuse to escape from the reality of dealing with their problems. This is according to Sandra Pretorius, the director of the centre.

“The scourge of substance abuse is increasing due to economic challenges, such as unemployment, poverty and domestic stresses, which affects the mental health of communities,” said Pretorius.

“Substance abuse does not discriminate when it comes to age, gender, financial status or qualifications – it can affect anyone. Sadly, people aged 13 and upwards of 35 form part of the statistics.
“The abuse of cannabis and alcohol remains the highest, according to the South African Community Epidemiology Network of Drug Use.
“Opioids, such as heroin and nyaope, remain the most popular drugs, followed by crystal meth, Cat and Mandrax.”

Pretorius added over-the-counter medications have also become popular among young men, whereas it was previously predominately used by females aged 35 years and older.

In their efforts to try and discourage the use of substance abuse, Sanca offers training to schools, companies, clinics and churches.

About the organisation
Sanca Horizon Alcohol and Drug Centre is a member of Sanca National. This body is responsible for the monitoring of all Sanca Inpatient Treatment Centres and Outpatient Treatment Centres.

Sanca Horizon was established in 1961 for the inpatient treatment of male and female adults for the abuse of all chemical substances. In 1999, it established The Bridge Adolescent Inpatient Treatment Centre.

In 2019, The Hlengwani Adolescent In-patient Treatment Centre was established for the admission of teenagers.
