#Covid-19: A call to empower people with disability

The pandemic has exacerbated the pre-existing challenges faced by the vulnerable residents.

The Covid-19 pandemic has severely harmed the world economy with serious consequences that are gravely impacting communities. People with disabilities have also not been spared.

The pandemic has exacerbated the pre-existing challenges faced by the vulnerable residents. A struggle to get basic services, employment, travel to a hospital or shop, is among the reality of post-Covid-19 life for disabled residents.

The Reiger Park Centre for People with Disability has been working tirelessly in ensuring that disabled people get support. But this initiative can only be a success through continuous support from both local businesses and individuals.

To tackle poverty among people with disability, the centre needs your support to continue with its efforts to provide the disabled with training to enable them to become entrepreneurs or easily enter the workforce.

Apart from the skills development project, the centre also serves as a daycare centre for the disabled and needs your support to continue providing some of the services. These include food to feed its beneficiaries, equipment for training purposes, and wheelchairs.

Vaccination roll-out
Persons with disabilities under 60 have not been prioritised for the Covid-19 vaccine.
Even so, the Reiger Park Centre for People with Disability said it is continuously liaising with the Department of Social Development to ensure that its beneficiaries get registered and vaccinated when their turn comes.

“Our beneficiaries are aged between 18 and 59, but because of the existing barriers among persons with disabilities, we are hoping that the department will arrange that thee vaccine come to our centres,” said Mathikinca.

The Department of Health recently launched phase two of the vaccine roll-out plan, which is primarily for persons over 60.
The country has by June 7 vaccinated over 1 524 589 people.
