East Rand Mall taxi rank gets a facelift

Completion is expected to be before the end of the year.

East Rand Mall taxi rank commuters can look forward to a brand new-looking taxi rank.

Following contact with the mall’s management to find out what was happening to the taxi rank, which is currently under construction, it was confirmed that the rank is finally getting upgraded.

East Rand Mall marketing manager Pierre Botha spoke to the Advertiser and explained how the project is going to take place.

“Yes, the rank is getting a full redevelopment, a full facelift for the better use of the community,” explained Botha.

“The project, which will take eight months, is going to be done in two sections with the side where the taxis normally operate to be worked on first. The rank is continuing to function because we can’t afford to close the cross-border side (where taxis are now temporarily operating from). Once the one side is complete, there will be a two to three-month break before the upgrades continue on the cross-border side.”

The Advertiser visited the East Rand Mall management in October last year about the taxi rank’s deteriorating state – the tarmac in particular.
This was after passers-by and the taxi rank management had expressed concerns over the potholes at the rank.

Upon the visit to the mall’s management, it was confirmed that an upgrade was in the pipeline.

Covid-19 safety at the rank

Meanwhile, the rank has strengthened its fight to keep commuters and drivers safe from the coronavirus with the recent deployment of foot-operated hand sanitising stations next to each taxi queue.
