Business as usual for Kian as he impresses in Mpumalanga

Boksburg swimming star Kian Keylock began 2021 with a good start in the pool as he impressed at Swimming South Africa’s (SSA) High Performance Olympic Relay Team Training Camp/Grand Prix in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, between January 7 and 9.

Keylock, who was selected by SSA to be part of the camp, featured in three disciplines, picking up two golds and one silver. The golds arrived in the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley. He settled for the runner-up spot in the 50m breaststroke.

According to SSA, the purpose of the camp was in preparation for SSA to try and qualify relay teams for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.

For this gala, Keylock was nominated to attempt to qualify for the 4 x 100m individual medley relay and should he gain qualification between the upcoming galas this year, the Boksburg Aquatics star would swim the breaststroke leg.

“There were no personal best times at the gala but I’m feeling good about where I am to achieve all my goals in the next couple of months,” he said.

Keylock clocked 2:16.32 in the 200m individual medley, just shading Tyron Klynhans to touching the wall – who finished in 2:16.95. Jaiden Staines (2:17.96) rounded off the top three.

In the 100m breaststroke, 1:05.23 was enough to see Keylock through but it was again a close race to the finish. Brenden Crawford clocked an almost identical time of 1:05.29, with Staines again settling for bronze (1:06.64).

However, Crawford also got his shine as it was he who edged Keylock in the 50m breaststroke, winning it in 30.04. Keylock clocked 30.76 with Staines putting down 31.29 to finish third.
