Rotary donates beds to Tambo Memorial Hospital

Kangaroo Mother Care Lodger Facility will soon accommodate mothers during their premature babies stay in hospital

The birth of a baby is one of the most special occasions in one’s life, more especially when giving birth to a premature baby.

A preemie mother spends much time in hospital, as their lives pretty much start to revolve around the baby unit up until the baby is discharged from hospital.

In making this journey easier for preemie mothers, the Rotary Club of Boksburg in association with the Rotary Foundation donated brand new eight beds to Tambo Memorial Hospital on October 14.

The donation forms part of an ongoing project for the Kangaroo Mother Care Lodger Facility at the hospital where mothers will have the opportunity to sleep over and spend time with their babies while their babies are kept in the hospital.

Facilitating this project, Lebo Makhathini from Rotary Club Boksburg, highlighted that last year they submitted requests for funds from the Rotary Foundation after the hospital approached them with this exciting idea to upgrade ward one into a Kangaroo Mother Care Lodger Facility.

“Currently the mothers sit on chairs overnight; hence, the hospital asked us to help them with the upgrading of the ward. We want the ward to be homely for mothers during their stay and we are anticipating for it to be a family ward where fathers can also spend time with the mothers and the babies,”Makhathini said.

Makhathini added this wasn’t the first time they have extended their warm hearts to the hospital.

“Last year we brought educational therapy toys for the children at the pediatric ward. During Christmas Eve, we also bought gifts for the mothers, doctors and nurses at the prenatal ward,” she said.

Though the project it’s still in its early stages, the hospital’s staff are excited.

The hospital CEO Zenzo Ndabula, said: “We are encourage by NPO’s like Rotary who are showing support for our objectives of improving services for our patients.”

During the handover of the beds, Makhathini also used the opportunity to present a Rotary Family Health Days certificate of recognition to the hospital CEO Zenzo Ndabula for the hospitals front line workers who battled the coronavirus during this period.
