Watch: CBC learners coping with wearing masks at school

Learners are only allowed to remove their masks during break time

Though the country has moved to Level 1 of the lockdown, precautionary measures such as the wearing of masks in public spaces, social distancing and hand washing have become the new normal.

For the past eight months we have seen school children returning to school in the midst of the pandemic which exposed them to a completely different routine, like wearing masks and other protocols that needed to be adhered to in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Advertiser spoke to Year 0 and Year 00 learners at Christian Brothers’ College, Boksburg, to find out if they have been coping with the wearing of masks at school.

Cowen Visage (5) said: “I am coping with wearing a mask at school and it doesn’t irritate me. I’m just happy to be back at school.”

Indicating that they are mostly comfortable with wearing a mask at school are from left: Aiden Brentjies, Peter Wetdewich and Thabang Letsoalo.

Alessio De Andrade (5) said: “I don’t love to wear a mask because I can’t breathe.”

Zane Chivhenge (6) said: “I love wearing my Iron Man mask to school because Iron Man is my favourite super hero.”

One of the educators, Bronwyn Loring, shared that most of the learners have now adapted to wearing masks at school even though some don’t have fitting sizes which tends to be a problem because now and again they pull up their masks.

“During teaching and learning it’s difficult to hear the sound when they are speaking, so I just ask them to slightly move it down a bit so that I can hear and when they are done answering they pull it up. We only allow them to remove their masks during break time,” Loring said.
