Beyers Park couple still in love after 55 years of marriage

The couple went through tough times but learnt to take the good times with the bad

Lovebirds Robert (76) and Glenda Tweedale (78) from Beyers Park will be celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary on October 2.

“Doing stuff together, but also giving each other space has been the key to our marriage,” said the couple.

Robert explained it was not love at first sight when they met each other at a church guild camp in Pretoria in 1963.

“We first got to know each other as friends for about a year before we started going out. It was a slow relationship,” said Robert.

After being together for a year, the couple tied the knot in 1965 at the Westley Methodist Church.

Robert and Glenda grew up in Pretoria, moved to East London and Oranjemund before relocating to Boksburg in 1975.

Robert was trained as a millwright through South African Railways and Harbours (SAR & H). He also worked at the Public Works Department as a fire prevention inspector before he retired.
Meanwhile, Glenda worked as a government clerk before she resigned and became a home executive after getting married.

The couple has been blessed with four children, Wendy Tweedale, Adele Elgar, Fiona Vorster and Brendin Tweedale, as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

“Losing a child and grandchild was difficult for us, but we learnt to take the good times with the bad times. We worked through a situation when the need arose to overcome the hurdle,” Glenda said.

Robert and Glenda will celebrate the special day with a family gathering.
