Three suspects nabbed with illegal firearms

Reiger Park police arrested three suspects who were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in separate incidents within the policing precinct.

Police said the first two suspects were arrested by the station’s crime intelligence unit on September 13, shortly after they robbed a couple at gunpoint of their belongings, along Fish Eagle Street in Extension Five, Ramaphosa.

The suspects, aged 23 and 25, allegedly confronted the woman and her girlfriend as they were walking down the street and pointed a firearm at them and demanded their belongings.

The robbers fired one shot and took R120 from the woman. The complainant reported the matter to the police who responded swiftly and managed to track the suspects down.

They were found in possession of a 9mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition. They are now facing possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, pointing of a firearm and armed robbery charges.

It also turned out that the suspects had known the couple, as they were moments before the robbery together allegedly indulging in illegal substances, and they (the suspects) allegedly attempted to rape the woman while the boyfriend was sent out to buy dagga.

In another unrelated incident, police officers were recently carrying out routine crime prevention duties in Ramaphosa when they noticed a suspicious man. When he saw the police, he reportedly tried to run away but tripped and fell.

The officers cornered him. They searched him and recovered an unlicensed firearm with six live rounds of ammunition.

Officers proceeded to the suspect’s house where they also found 21 live rounds of ammunition. The 30-year-old Lesotho national was charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The newly-appointed Reiger Park SAPS station commander, Lt Col Eugene Roets, said he was impressed by the members’ job well done.

“These arrests and recovery of dangerous weapons show that we are moving towards reclaiming our back from criminals. This was my first priority when I arrive here five months ago.”

All suspects are expected to appear in Boksburg Magistrate court soon.
