Gauteng residents urged to save water despite dam levels

The Department of Water and Sanitation urges water users in Gauteng not to be lulled by the current levels of the dams

Water users in Gauteng are warned to exercise restraint even as the overall levels of the Gauteng water reservoir leaped to higher levels recently.

The overall levels of the dams in Gauteng sat at 90 per cent during this time last year, surging up to 98.0 per cent.

According to Sputnik Ratau, Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, the Bon Accord Dam is at full capacity as it presently hovers at 104.8 per cent.

This is down from recent 105.1 per cent but higher compared to the levels of 101.8 per cent during the same time last year.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation urges water users in Gauteng not to be lulled by the current levels of the dams but to press ahead with efforts to save as much water as possible.

“The department believes that a change in patterns of water usage is central to making sure that dam levels remain in a stable position,” Ratau said.

The Rietvlei and Roodeplaat dams are at 99.8 per cent and 100.2 per cent, respectively.

During this period last year, the Rietvlei Dam stood at 81.8 per cent with the Roodeplaat Dam at 96.7 per cent.

The Bronkhorstspruit Dam fell from 96.7 per cent last week to 94.9 per cent this week.

The Department further warns that because of the erratic weather conditions in the country, the collective action to save water should become ingrained in the daily activities of community members and the businesses.
