“The men were unaware they had been followed to the centre,” Ramaube said. The nephew told police they parked the car and his uncle got out and opened the boot to take two boxes of money out.

This is when they were ambushed by three suspects, one armed with a firearm, and told to lie on the ground. The robbers took the two boxes, containing an undisclosed amount of cash, but dropped the one as a shoot-out ensued with the victims, who were both armed with pistols.

“During the exchange of gunfire between the victims and the robbers, the uncle was fatally wounded in the chest,” Ramaube said.

Preliminary investigations revealed 25 spent cartridges on the scene.

“In line with CCTV footage, we believe the three suspects left the scene in a white BMW,” Ramaube said.

Anyone with information which can assist in this investigation should contact the police on 011 892 8327, 071 675 6986 or 08600 10111.
