BAC ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ results

The club also paid a special tribute to Adele Cowley, who ran her first Comrades in 2007

Numerous athletes from the Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) were part of history as they represented the club in their exponential numbers during this year’s Comrades Marathon’s “Race the Comrades Legends” virtual race last month.

The race served as a consolation event for the die-hard athletes who were ready to pull their hair out in desperation for some long distance running after the normal Comrades race had succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s race has since been forwarded to next year.

Three members of the club did the 45km distance of the Race the Comrades Legends, namely Nikelwa Gunya, Percy Khumalo and Megan Russell. Moreover, 14 runners from the club did the 5km distance and 14 more ran the 10km.

The club extended its words of gratitude to all the runners who showed their passion for the sport and pride for the club as they barred the cold day on June 14, donned the famous blue and white strip of the club and took to the streets.

The club also paid a special tribute to Adele Cowley, who ran her first Comrades in 2007.

The statement read: “Adele Cowley, Comrades No 40095, ran her first Comrades Marathon in 2007, but owing to some extremely serious illnesses only managed to do her second Comrades in 2013, after which she was once again forced to miss a year. Her love for it drove her to overcome her difficulties and run in 2015, 2016 and 2017. She had to miss out 2018, but has been back every year since.”

A total of 102 nations participated in the race making the foreign entry tally in Race the Comrades Legends virtual higher than the usual foreign contingent at the traditional Comrades Marathon.
