GDE records over 200 000 online applications

When the system went live on June 25, 68 000 applications were received

As of June 29, the Gauteng Department of Education has recorded 233 035 online applications – of which 100 599 applications were for Grade One and 132 436 applications were for Grade Eight.

The online application for Grades One and Eight for the 2021 academic year went live on June 25 and received 68 000 applications.

According to GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona, technical glitches regarding the OTPs and confirmation of individual records by the Department of Home Affairs were experienced and resolved within 30 minutes into the application period.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said: “We are indebted to parents who embraced our system and we encourage those who have not applied to do so. Parents are reminded to upload documents on the system or submit hard copies at schools applied to, within seven days of making an application. All parents who experience difficulty may contact 0800 000 789 for assistance.

“The online system was introduced to make it easy and convenient for parents to submit applications rather than queue at a school. It has also provided accurate information to the department for planning purposes.”
