Dump 1 000kg or less waste at metro’s waste site for free

Ekurhuleni's spokesperson Themba gadebe added that the disposal of general and non-hazardous solid waste in excess of 1 000kg will be charged a standard tariff fee of R260.40 per kilogram.

The metro’s waste disposal sites and mini disposal sites are now open and residents can dump 1 000 kilograms of their general and non-hazardous solid waste for free.

“Council has made provision in the interest of the citizens owning premises within the vicinity of the council-owned dumping sites, for domestic refuse, garden refuse, small quantities of bulky refuse and builders rubble to be disposed free of charge or at a prescribed tariff determined by Council from time to time at the refuse transfer station provided the waste is not generated on a business premises and the load of the vehicle does not exceed 1 000kg”.

He added that every resident utilising council-controlled dumping sites such as the landfill site, satellite station or mini disposal site is expected to abide by the set council instructions and procedures.

“There are control measures in place for all who wish to access the council-owned waste disposal sites”.

For residents to gain authorised entry into council-owned waste disposal sites, they need to enter the sites only at authorised access points, provide officials onsite with particulars required documents with regard to the composition of the refuse they want to dispose, follow instructions given regarding the disposal point for their specific waste.

“The measures are to prevent informal waste pickers who occasionally attempt to gain unauthorized entry.

“No person shall bring any intoxicating liquor onto a landfill site or refuse transfer station or mini disposal site controlled by the Council,” he said

The metro had recently revamped some of their mini disposal sites in Leondale and Vosloorus to promote cleanliness and eradicate the scourge of illegal dumping in the township areas.

MMC for Environment and Waste Management Services Khosi Mabaso said, “We are gradually running out of space and need to do everything necessary to minimise amounts of waste reaching our disposal sites.

“It is our wish that these facilities must serve as a catalyst to promote local economic development activities such as composting”.

Residents can dispose of the following at the disposal sites free of charge closer to where they stay: garden waste, rubble less than 1 (cubic metre) m3, recyclable paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, wood and metal.

The sites are open seven days a week, including public holidays except on Christmas day.

Gadebe said during the months from April to September, the sun sets earlier making it unsafe for the public and staff due to reduced visibility.

Therefore, the operating hours for the sites are categorized into two, winter/other and summer/other period of the year as follows:

Operating hours on certain months: April to September daily from 7am to 6pm October to March daily from 7am to 7pm.
