Waiting game for club rugby

Mthethwa made the announcement at a briefing on as he reported on the department's Covid-19 sector relief fund

Despite the announcement recently made by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa about contact sporting codes being now allowed to start training, the wait continues as to how and when the government will allow the return of rugby, and amateur club rugby is no different.

As part of the announcement, the minister confirmed the return of non-contact sport but soccer and rugby are among the sporting codes still in the dark. Rugby, like most sporting codes, was forced to go into a hiatus amid the wild spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club board member Danie Matthee said: “We have not had any feedback as yet from the Valke Rugby Union whether there will be any club rugby this year. I think all unions are in the dark in this regard. It’s all in the hands of government.

“I know there is hope for at least a single round of the Valke club leagues but a final decision is only possible once government’s intentions are known. We are all waiting anxiously. I know Boksburg is extremely keen to start training as soon as permitted in order to be ready for any league or other games on offer this year.”

Mthethwa made the announcement at a briefing on as he reported on the department’s Covid-19 sector relief fund.

Matthee, a long standing rugby man, was part of local amateur rugby governing body, the Valke Rugby Union until the end of last year before returning to the Boksburg Rugby Club.
