Windmill Park church donates food parcels to the needy

73-year-old Agnes Sokhulu said she was very happy that she received the food parcels because she didn't have anything to survive on for the coming week

Non-profit organisation New Covenant Home, in partnership with CFC Holy Ghost Fire Ministry, based in Windmill Park, opened their hearts to the less fortunate people in Windmill Park.

For the past four weeks they have distributed about 300 food parcels to needy families who have been affected by the lockdown.

On May 13, hundreds of people queued outside the church, with some wearing masks and observing social distancing protocols.

According to Past Andries Nkosi, who has been the head pastor at CFC Holy Ghost Fire Ministry for the past 18 years, with the help of New Covenant Home they were able to fulfill the mandate of the church, which is to look after the needy.

“After observing some of the challenges faced by the community of Windmill Park, we decided as a church to reach out to them with food. The church then made some contributions, as well as New Covenant Home which bought essential food, such as 5kg mealie meal, vegetables and canned food, to assist disadvantaged families during this period,” Nkosi said.

Past Rachel Zwane, from New Covenant Home, said: “We have targeted local pastors from needy areas after seeing the frustration from people due to challenges of the lockdown. We started buying goods with money from our pockets, but as time went by we received assistance from the Solidarity Fund. We have since reached out to the people of Soweto, Rondebult, Tsakane, Windmill Park and Villa Liza.”

Both pastors highlighted that after the lockdown they will continue making a difference in the lives of people. Expressing her excitement for the food parcel, 73-year-old Agnes Sokhulu said she was very happy that she received the food parcels because she didn’t have anything to survive on for the coming week.

Sylvia Badenhorst (65), said: “I would like to thank the pastor for assisting us with food. I applied for other food reliefs but hadn’t receive anything, but at least the church kept their word.

“Meanwhile, on the same day they proceeded to Past Vincent Masina’s church called Kingsway Heritage of Faith Sanctuary in Dawn Park, where about 80 people from Villa Liza queued to receive food parcels. About 65 people benefited from the food parcels.”
