Blessings of food from church and NPO

They have reached out to about 6 200 families as part of the church's effort to alleviate poverty in their communities

On May 13, 150 families from Blue Sky and other surrounding informal settlements received food packs from the Seventh-Day Adventist Afrikaans Church, which is based on the Corner of Champion and Eighth Avenue.

The food pack included juice, bread, soya mince and porridge.

According to Graham Riley, of the church, since the lockdown started on March 27, they have reached out to about 6 200 families as part of the church’s effort to alleviate poverty in the communities.

“Every day we hand out meals to 150 people because we don’t want them to resort to crime just so that they can get something to eat. We hand out different food every day based on what we receive from Meals on Wheels and the contributions we get from the congregation,” Riley said.

He added that since they started they have seen fights among the people who are pushing each other to get food.

“In dealing with the problem, we have organised a local security company to come and oversee things for the safety of everyone,” he said.

Another member of the church, Jo Williams, further shared that on Mothers’ Day they surprised the women who normally collect food for their families with beautiful flowers.
