Tommy Gun remains in jail as GBH case postponed to June 1

Tommy "Gun" Oosthuizen has been remanded in custody on a charge of assault GBH and will reappear in court on June 1

Boksburg boxer Tommy Oosthuizen will have to wait a little longer in prison after his matter of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was postponed to June 1.

The matter was due to be heard at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on May 6, but according to senior prosecutor Henk Strydom, further investigations in relation to several dockets involving Oosthuizen meant that the matter had to be postponed, and Oosthuizen was remanded in custody at Boksburg Correctional Services.

The multiple IBO champion allegedly attacked the complainant at a pub in Parkdene in November after the man allegedly made a joke directed at the pugilist.

However, Oosthuizen was only arrested earlier this year because Boksburg police hadn’t been immediately made aware of the incident.

The arrest was eventually made in February, at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, ironically, where the boxer was meant to appear on child maintenance charges.

At the time, he was given a new date to re-appear for the child maintenance charges because of his arrest.

Another arrest, by Dawn Park police, preceded the one in connection with the pub incident, and this time Oosthuizen was accused of common assault. However, the case was not placed on the court roll due to technical reasons, including a lack of proof of injuries and the complainant’s statements being inconsistent.

On February 28, the boxer returned to court where he was denied bail (in connection with the pub incident) after the state had brought a strong enough case against the pugilist to deny him bail.

Oosthuizen was expected to make his long-awaited return to the boxing ring and was included in Golden Gloves Promotions’ All or Nothing event card which was supposed to take place at Emperors Palace on March 21.
