Covid-19: Rugby goes on lockdown

NSRA is made up of rugby unions from Limpopo, Falkens, Lions, Blue Bulls (Gauteng) and Leopards (North-West). According to Noordvaal Schools Rugby Association chairperson Ferdi Niemand, time, or rather lack thereof, for school rugby to still go on following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s update on the lockdown was a huge factor in making the decision for 2020 school rugby to be written off.

“With rugby involving travelling across provinces and time for schooling being limited due to the Covd-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to cancel all school rugby within the region until next year,” said Niemand during a telephone conversation with the Advertiser.

“With most of high schools’ rugby first teams made up of matrics, going ahead with the rugby would only add stress to those who are already under pressure with the limited time for studies.

“This is very sad for us because this year was actually our centenary year as Noordvaal rugby. We will be celebrating our centenary year next year.”
The South African Rugby Union (Saru) is expected to make an announcement on the state of club rugby soon, with the country’s rugby governing body still remaining hopeful of Springbok tests going ahead still.
