Ramaphosa foreign nationals help the needy with groceries

About 60 shop owners decided to reach out to the community after seeing a need and decided to raise money to buy food for the less fortunate.

Foreign national shop owners in Ramaphosa informal settlement donated food parcels to 150 vulnerable families on April 23.

The groceries include teabags, rice, mealie meal, cooking oil, bake beans, juice and sugar.

According to Tagesa Heramo, the leader of the foreign nationals in the informal settlement, about 60 shop owners decided to reach out to the community after seeing a need and decided to raise money to buy food for the less fortunate.

“We then contacted the community leaders who identified vulnerable families in the area. We wanted to show our support to the community who have been hit hard during this trying time of the lockdown,” Heramo said.

On the day of the handover, some of foreign nationals gathered outside the Reiger Park Police Station before heading to the houses of the beneficiaries to deliver the groceries.

One of the community leaders in Ramaphosa informal settlement, Silent Kgapola, expressed gratitude for the donations received.

“On behalf of the community, I thank our brothers for thinking about the needy families during this time.

“At least some of the families who didn’t know where they would get their next meal from will sleep in peace tonight,” Kgapola said.
