Allen Park resident (71) tests positive for Covid-19

The 71-year-old woman is currently being treated in a hospital in Benoni

An Allen Park resident (71) is currently being treated at the Life Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni after having tested positive for Covid-19 on April 9.

Kempton Park Council for the Aged CEO André Naude confirmed this on Friday morning and said the woman was a housing scheme resident.

A WhatsApp message sent out by Naude to different groups on Thursday quickly started circulating on social media.

Naude said the patient was in contact with various staff members and residents. All these people have been placed in isolation in their own apartments and are monitored daily by Sr Thea Muller for any sign of the illness.

When asked whether there was any idea where the patient might have contracted the virus, Naude ssaid it was too difficult to tell. “She was frequently ill and had been to and from hospital on multiple occasions.”

About 450 general staff and residents are still on the premises of the retirement village in Allen Grove.

“The provision of meals continues as normal but meals must be collected by residents. Residents were urged not to socialise among one another during this time. They are allowed to walk to the main gate to collect parcels from family members.”

No person is allowed to leave the premises and only emergency vehicles and essential staff are allowed to enter. This strict protocol is set to end once President Cyril Ramaphosa has lifted the national lockdown, said Naude.

“Hand sanitisers have been commissioned to each and every one on the premises, and the department of health will disinfect the premises on Tuesday.”

Naude said the strict protocols imposed after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s first speech, were still intact:

– No visitors are allowed, except in highly circumstantial cases.

– No big events will be held at Allen Park (the last meeting was on March 17 to inform residents about the coronavirus).

– The annual fundraising fête planned for May 9 was moved to October 3.

– The morning function to be hoste by Francois and Elizabeth Fourie on April 4 was rescheduled for November 7.

– All church services and other events have been called to a halt until further notice.

– The council ordered R13 000 worth of sanitising products (1000 x 50ml) that was distributed to all staff and residents.

– Hand sanitising stations have been placed throughout the entire care centre and assisted living.

– Cleaning staff were instructed to regularly disinfect all often used surfaces.

– No deliveries are allowed. All parcels are left at security.
