Kian Keylock unlocks another swimming record

Next for Keylock is the SA Junior Nationals in Durban in April at the Kings Park Pool, which happens to be his favourite place to swim in.

Boksburg’s very own swimming sensation Kian Keylock blitzed to a finishing time of 30:24 seconds to set a new South African u-14 boys 50m breaststroke record at the Grand Prix Invitational Swimming meet, recently hosted in Durban.

The CBC Boksburg star broke the old record of 30:37 set in 2016 by Joshua Hamilton.

Keylock now holds both the 50 and 100m breaststroke u-14 boys national records.

The Durban meet was the third of four legs of the Grand Prix series. The first one was held in Nelspruit late last year with the second one held in Cape Town early this year, which Keylock missed.

The fourth and last leg will be held in Bedfordview on March 14 and 15.

The series, which is an open one, is a platform for the country’s top swimmers to attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Tokyo between July 24 and August 9.

Keylock is hoping to make it for the 2024 Games.

In Durban, he finished fourth in the 50m breaststroke, fourth again in the 100m breaststroke, fifth in the 200m distance and eighth in the 200m individual medley.

Asked of his performance against the country’s best, the Boksburg starlet said: “I feel happy about my progress and I obviously would want to go to the Olympics, it’s every swimmers dream.”
