Wrestling club hits the ground running

BWC has a number of past international level wrestlers who’ve won medals at international level. They include the likes of Richard Addinall, Armando Hietbrink, Zumicke Geringer, Jeannie Coetzer and Mpho Madi to mention a few’.

Action at the Boksburg Wrestling Club is underway with the wrestling season having started in January.

The lengthy wrestling campaign goes on all the way until the end of November.

A statement from the club reads: ‘Boksburg Wrestling Club invites young and old, male and female to come and have a look at what a great sport wrestling is for the whole family, especially for children: boys and girls. Wrestling is highly recommended by several rugby coaches, including sevens national team coach Neil Powell’.

Interested members of the public who are keen in being part of the sport can make their way to the club where they will be required to fill in a form and will be advised as far as fees are concerned.

The club is situated at No. 13 Cason Road, Cason.

The club’s training days are Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6pm and 8pm. Wrestlers from five years old and older are trained and coached.

Wrestlers compete in different weight divisions, age categories and styles. The styles include freestyle (LL), Greco-Roman (GR – upper body) and female (FS).

The age categories include LTPD (long term participant development; u-6 to u-8); youth, u-9 to u-13; u-15; cadets u-15 to u-17; juniors u-17 to u-20 and then seniors.

During the course of each year, clubs participate against other clubs and provinces. There’s also the Hawks Wrestling League which takes place once a month on Friday evenings where beginners wrestle and are taught about the sport.

‘We are privileged to have wrestlers, coaches and team managers that participated internationally and represented South Africa many times,’ continued the statement from the club.

‘We have senior wrestlers in the club that represented SA at international level, including Zander Geringer and Marco Coetzee. Upcoming wrestlers include Liam Rheeder, Tiaan Stander, Michael Mhlanga, Jesse van Baalen and most importantly, our youth wrestlers.
