Benoni Northerns beats CBC in a clash of the titans

“I think we were just outplayed by a better team and that’s the reality of the situation.”  - Old Boys skipper

Benoni Northerns emerged tops in the clash of the titans against CBC Old Boys during their Eastern Cricket Premier League clash at CBC on Sunday, February 2.

The visitors, much like the hosts, produced a brilliant bowling performance that limited a side of CBC’s calibre to just 105 runs in 43 overs of batting before overhauling it in 29 overs to secure a well-deserved four-wicket bonus point win.

It was a strangle job by the away side which saw Old Boys opener and top scorer Yaseen Valli finish with just 18.

Northerns’ Dan van der Berg led the onslaught with 3/26 in eight overs of bowling while his teammates Stefano Di Bartolomeo and Lance Humphrey finished with 2/19 (two maidens) and 2/30; 1 respectively.

As was expected with two quality sides clashing, the hosts produced a bowling clinic of their own – unfortunately for them to a slightly less effective extent as the visitors walked away with a big win.

All of Old Boys’ trio of captain Casey Arnold, who’s having one of his better seasons, Rynard de Lange and Devon Botha registered 2/13; 2, 2/25; 1 and 2/18; 2 with the leather respectively but it wasn’t enough to spoil a clinical performance from the Benonians.

The visitors would go on to post 107/6.

Old Boys skipper Arnold said: “We were a little bit under pressure, Benoni really, really bowled well – I mean we can’t fault them. They did really well and we weren’t at our best with the bat, but it was really a 160 (runs) wicket and we only got 105.

“We really bowled well, but 105 was just not enough runs and they really did play some good cricket.
