Residents dig trenches as request for speed bumps falls on deaf ears

Ward 43 councillor Bruce Reid said that he originally escalated the matter to the roads department in May last year and has now asked the department for feedback.

Windmill Park residents in the vicinity of Esselen Street feel that their requests for the installation of speed bumps have fallen on deaf ears.

A concerned community member, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the problem was reported on numerous occasions since September 2019, but nothing has been done.

She further alleged that other frustrated residents then took matters into their own hands by digging a trench where they believe speed humps should be erected to slow motorists down.

“The community requested that speed bumps should be installed in Esselen Street as several motorists speeding down the road pose a danger to the children in the area. We just want our area to be safe.

“Unfortunately, a few other community members dug a trench out of desperation as they lost a loved one due to motorists speeding down the road,” the resident explained.

Even though she agrees that these motorists should stop speeding, she is not convinced that digging trenches will solve the issue.

“These trenches only damage our vehicles and it doesn’t stop people from speeding. It’s also dangerous as a motorbike won’t be able to see it a night and could cause an accident. It’s unfair that we have to live with it because of what other people decided.

“We just want the trenches to be replaced with speed bumps,” she added.

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
