Urban Ruins appeals to community for help in replacing stolen bicycles

The bicycles in question were being used to train children between three and five years to ride bicycles without training wheels and teach them basic road safety and road signs.

Urban Ruins, a centre for children, is appealing for assistance to replace children’s bicycles which were stolen during a recent break-in.

According to the centre’s founding member, Leigh Ingle, the staff arrived at the centre on January 13 to find that the thugs probably took advantage of the then dysfunctional electric fence.

They entered the yard, broke into the structure where the bicycles were kept and stole all six bicycles.

As if that were not enough, they also broke a window of the main building to gain entry and attempted to steal the gas stove used to cook for the children.

Ingle further pointed out that this was the 36th break-in at the property in five years.

The Boksburg police confirmed the latest break-in and they have registered a case of burglary. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Boksburg police on 011 841 6800/6845/6844.

Established more than five years ago, Urban Ruins is an NPO operating as a safe playing area for children to play.

Programmes at the centre include an early childhood development (ECD) centre for underprivileged children, a free aftercare centre, Urban Ruins Active Cycling Development Club, art workshops, reading and literacy programmes, a book club and the daily feeding scheme.

Contact Ingle on 074 905 7269 or Sharon Sibanda on 063 025 7086 to assist.
