Resident confused about losing small amounts of electricity

The resident is urging residents to keep a close eye when they are loading electricity on prepaid meters.

A Sunward Park resident is scratching his head after noticing that he is losing small amounts of electricity on his prepaid meter.

According to the resident, who wished to remain anonymous, every time he loads electricity on his prepaid meter at his house, he loses approximately 0.1 kWh of power.

“I realised that I’m robbed of small amounts of electricity every month I recharge my prepaid meter and I’m furious about it. When I buy electricity for example for R1 000, it says on the invoice that I will get 451.1 kWh.

“As soon as I enter the PIN number on my slip, only 451 kWh will reflect on my meter. I want to know what is happening to the 0.1 kWh that is not reflecting on the meter,” said the concerned resident.

“0.1 kWh might not be a lot, but it can last you a few minutes and if this happens to millions of people, they can make a lot of money. Every small amount adds up at the end of the day.”

He said that it was about six months ago when he first noticed the small amount was not reflecting on his meter.

“I kept all my receipts from 2009. This is why I realised that I’m suddenly losing electricity. I probably have a better system in place than the municipality,” added the resident.

According to him, the problem was reported to the metro numerous times.

“I couldn’t get through to the call centre, so I went to the municipality to make them aware of my complaint. They told me the issue lies with my prepaid meter because it’s old and that it doesn’t go to the nearest decimal point.

“They will, however, investigate the matter. I hope they can sort it out for me as I don’t want to lose anything just because my prepaid meter is old.”

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
