Metro fails to fix water leaks

“The City must do an audit of our water network to see if it’s necessary to replace all water lines so that we can deal with these water leaks once and for all. We have old infrastructure and new water lines could prevent water leaks and save the metro money.” - ward councillor

Residents are at their wits’ end as a persistent water leak in Krynauw Street in Cason has been reported to the metro numerous times, to no avail.

This is according to Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos. The problem has been going on for about a month and a half, with precious water going to waste.

The cause of the leak is unclear.

De Vos noted that metro workers repaired a fire hydrant some 20m away from the leak but did not fix the leak because they allegedly weren’t given a reference number for the job.

“It’s not the sole responsibility of the residents to report water leaks. When technicians, supervisors or plumbers from the metro notice a water leak, it should be fixed immediately. South Africa is a water-scarce country and we don’t have the luxury to waste water,” de Vos told the Advertiser.

He added that fibre construction workers should use technology that can help them avoid damaging pipelines.

Atlasville resident Dick van der Westuizen recently expressed his concerns about a water leak outside his home in Reier Road.

He said the leak has persisted for about three years.

“I have contacted the metro on numerous occasions and nothing has been done to repair the leak. It was also reported to the ward councillor,” said a Van der Westhuizen.

The problem started after the metro replaced water meters in the street.

“Residents are encouraged to save water, but I’ve been struggling for years now to get this water leak repaired. I just want the metro to attend to the problem as I can’t stand to waste water any more.

“I try my best to save water where possible. I don’t even water my garden any more. I have placed large empty buckets outside my house so that I can save this precious resource,” he said.
