Watch: Kilolitres of clean water wasted from Jansen Park burst pipe

According to residents, it’s been days now that water has been flowing down the street, turning the road into a little stream.

While Ekurhuleni residents are being encouraged to help conserve water, the metro is allowing kilolitres of water to go to waste from a burst pipe on Edgar Road, Jansen Park.

Some of the residents told the Advertiser that they reported the waste of the city’s precious water resources on Wednesday morning and received reference numbers, but nothing happened.

An upset resident of the property next to the burst pipe said he noticed the problem at about 7am on Wednesday, October 16, and understands that other community members had already reported it to the metro and the ward councillor, who was later on Wednesday seen assessing the situation at the site.

“Water should not be wasted when we in the country have areas that are experiencing droughts and water shortages. Such loss of thousands of litres of water could affect our water supply and we could soon have a water crisis like other areas,” said the resident.

Another resident said calls were logged on Wednesday morning and they were told that a repair team would come out urgently.

When this publication arrived at the scene, water from the burst pipe was seen streaming into the street, all the way around the corner into Vickers Street, creating a slippery hazard for motorists, before flowing into the nearby park.

It remains unclear as to why it is taking the repair team so long to come out and fix the problem. No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to press.
