Taxi association spoils the elderly of Villa Liza

The gift hamper comprised tekkies and lots of sweets.

Shying away from the stigma associated with taxi drivers, the Vosloorus, Boksburg District Taxi Association (VBDTA) route mainline went all out to show their love for the elderly people of Villa Liza and surrounding areas on October 9.

Members of the VBDTA handed over 69 gifts to the elderly and spoilt them with a delicious lunch. The event took place at an open space in Hare Street in Villa Liza.

During the event, the elderly sang and danced, while various speakers also spoke on various topics.

The keynote speaker, Precious Mokgabudi from the Department of Social Development, encouraged the elderly to make use of their services.

According to the secretary of VBDTA, Bongani Nxumalo, the event was supposed to be held in August in line with Women’s Day, but due to unforeseen circumstances they had to push it to October.

“This event was initiated by the Women’s League, who fall under the VBDTA. These women are not taxi drivers but taxi owners. They came to us with the idea and we supported them fully, hence we are here today,” Nxumalo said.

Nxumalo said giving back to the elderly was a blessing to them, and they wanted to boost their spirit by showing them that they care.

Bonakele Sizani, chairperson for Women’s League, said every year they support various groups, like children, youth, women and the elderly, as their way of giving back to the community.

Nxumalo advised the elderly to visit their offices in Vosloorus if they are not happy with their services.

“Last year we held a party for disadvantage children, hence this year we decided to reach out to the elderly. We were more than happy to lend a helping hand to the elderly because these people are our supporters on a daily basis.”

Clementina Sidise (87) expressed gratitude to the VBDTA for their efforts.

All of the 69 beneficiaries belonged to the Villa Liza Support Group.
