CBC prepare for season with two wins in the bag

Old Boys defeated Avion by 186 runs on October 5 before taking care of Alberton on Sunday in a nine-wicket thrashing.

CBC Old Boys got their season preparations underway with two convincing wins in the Eastern Premier League curtain raiser, the Eastern Premier League T20 tournament at Willowmoore Park, against newly promoted Avion Park and Alberton.

Old Boys opener Mark Pearse picked up where he left off from last campaign as he all but single-handedly beat Avion with a massive personal haul of 156 runs; Ryno van der Merwe finished with an undefeated 89.

Thulani Radebe, a new recruit for Old Boys from Wattville, was the standout bowler with 2/27 in four overs.

In their attempt to chase the daunting target of 280/2 that Old Boys had set, Avion’s roof caved in before it was even finished being built as an aggressive Old Boys limited them to 95/9.

The in-form Boksburg outfit transferred their impressive display onto Sunday against Alberton, who were sent to bat first.

Alberton were expected to give captain Casey Arnold and co a tougher run, and they did as they set a challenging target of 174/5 in 20 overs.

But the Old Boys batting line-up, led by Arnold, was up to the task.

Arnold smashed 96 off 50 balls and talismanic striker Pearse knocked 77 off 32 as Old Boys closed in on the target.

The extras arrived to help Old Boys reach the target in 13.4 overs for a second convincing win in as many days.

Rynard de Lange finished with 2/27 in four overs with the leather, while Dillan Alberts took 1/16 in three overs.

Old Boys play their final warm-up game on October 12 against Duduza before getting their league campaign underway with a home encounter against Tembisa on Sunday.
