Cable thieves wreak havoc in Boksburg, EMPD arrest suspect

This morning, cable thieves reportedly stole live cables from Railway Street near the hospital in Plantation. They also stole cable from two separate spots on Trichardts Road between Cason Road and Railway Street.

Members of the EMPD Anti-Cable Theft Unit have this morning arrested one suspect believed to be behind the theft of plus-minus 300m long live cable, which left different parts of Boksburg in the dark this morning.

There are also reports of cable thefts in the Comet area and at the corner of Rondebult and the R554 in Groeneweide,

According to the EMPD spokesperson, Kobeli Mokheseng, members of the Anti-Cable Theft Unit responded to the complaint of cable thefts on Railway Road and managed to apprehend one of the suspects. The others, however, managed to escape.

“Investigations are underway to track down the other suspected cable thieves believed to be from the nearby informal settlements,” said Mokheseng.

Cable theft has been experienced recently in a number of places across Boksburg. Fed up residents of Groeneweide and other surrounding areas have this morning taken to the streets to protest against the recent spate of cable thefts their neighbourhoods have been experiencing.

Updates to follow as more information is made available.
