Springs knockout valiant Boksburg in Peregrine League

The half-time score was 28-7 in favour of the hosts.

Defending Peregrine League champion Springs Rugby Club took a step closer to defending their crown following a 47-26 win against a courageous TW Boksburg Rugby Club outfit.

They clashed in a Valke Peregrine League quarter-final tie at Olympia Park on August 10.

The Olympia Park outfit will now host North-West University on August 24 in their semi-final clash, while the loss for Boksburg spelt the end to their season.

Boksburg coach Francois Erasmus said: “We lost the game in the scrums, they put us under severe pressure by getting a lot of penalties at scrum time. We played our hearts out, scoring four nice tries, we gave them a good run for their money – very proud of my boys.”

Owls skipper Johan Labuschagne added: “It was great playing against a team of their stature and to see how we measure up against the bigger teams. It was a war zone. I’ve never seen so many brutal tackles and bumps in one game.

“Both sides stepped up their game in the physicality department and both teams had equally great chances to score, unfortunately for us, we didn’t take as many chances as Springs did.”

Springs hooker Stanley Peacock had a game he’ll never forget: scoring a hat-trick of tries, a stat you don’t come across every day for a hooker.

Number 10 Nico Funby also crossed the white wash on more than one occasion when he completed a brace of five-pointers, while Robin Howell also scored a try of his own.

Full back André Smith ended with a personal haul of 17 points when he added six conversions to his sole try.

Boksburg’s four tries arrived courtesy of Joe Meyer, Prince Mofokeng and Adriaan van der Nest.

In-form back Brandon Swart also joined in the try-scoring fray.

First receiver Henry Pike finished with a 75 per cent conversion rate when he nailed three of the four conversions on offer. – @SabeloBoksburg
