Cansa Swim Relay entries now open

Registration closes on August 31.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) is hosting its first Cansa Swim Relay on September 8, from 7am to 7pm.

Participants do not have to be concerned about the weather as the event will be hosted at St Benedict’s School indoor pool, in Bedfordview.

The event is a fund-raiser as part of Cansa’s Relay For Life East Rand event to raise money for Cansa Care Centres in Gauteng.

Sonia Pretorius, volunteer organiser and cancer survivor, said every year over 115 000 people in South Africa are affected by cancer.

“We’re challenging participants to be part of swimming a total of 115 000 lengths to recognise these individuals touched by cancer and to raise awareness and funds for Cansa Care Centres.

“It’s also an opportunity to honour caregivers by swimming laps in a 12-hour event,” Pretorius explained.

As a Global Hero of Hope ambassador (survivors who promote the Cansa Relay For Life movement), Pretorius added that this event is aimed at the average swimmer who is keen to stay fit as well as serious swimmers who want to use this as a training session.

“It’s a wonderful family get together where food stalls will be available for those who swim up an appetite and there will be plenty of space for friends to cheer and support swimmers.

“So young and old, come and join us for a fun-filled experience to raise funds for education, care and support services.”
