Tragedy strikes as girl with prosthetic leg loses battle with cancer

In February, the Advertiser published her story, which touched scores of people who phoned Lungile’s mother, Mavis Mkhwanazi, to find out how they could assist.

After a short but brave battle with cancer, Lungile Mkhhwanazi died on July 25.

Lungile recently had her wish fulfilled when Tambo Memorial Hospital gave her a prosthetic leg after hearing her desperate plea for the donation of, or financial assistance towards, the artificial limb.

The 16-year-old from Villa Liza was born a healthy child, but last year her right leg had to be amputated after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Last month, the Advertiser met up with Lungile and her mother outside the hospital after collecting her prosthetic leg.

Lungile looked happy and excited to finally get her wish fulfilled.

According to her father, Jacob Ngwenya, Lungile died in hospital after being admitted for the whole month.

“As a family we are still confused and shocked by her sudden death,” Ngwenya said.
