Mandela Day: Sanitary pads donated to learners of Windmill Park Secondary

Entrepreneurs are aiming to raise as many sanitary pads as possible in a 21-day period running concurrently with their #21DaySkipRopeChallenge.

Two young entrepreneurs, Thabo Mashaba and Tumisang Ratsipi, founders of #21DaySkipRopeChallenge, donated about 100 sanitary pads to learners of Windmill Park Secondary School on Mandela Day, July 18.

The two fitness gurus from Dawn Park run an online skipping rope-centred fitness programme aimed at helping participants to lose weight, get fit and have fun.

Mashaba said following the release of shocking statistics of schoolgirls who could not afford sanitary pads, his organisation decided to initiate the sanitary pads drive, #21DayPadsChallenge.

“Thirty per cent of South African schoolgirls miss school because they can’t afford sanitary pads, so we wanted to change that by making a difference in our community. So we have started the skipping rope project to raise awareness about this problem,” said Mashaba.

Ratsipi said they have encouraged the participants to donate two packs of sanitary pads when they enter the challenge.

“For 21 days, we call everyone in our network to donate pads for that particular month. June was our first month of collection, and we have had a positive response from the people,” Ratsipi said.

Mashaba said: “We plan on donating these pads every month to various schools in Ekurhuleni, and on every donation day we will have a fun-filled day of skipping, menstrual education and much more.”
