Comet Primary learners learn more about child protection

National Child Protection Week from May 28 to June 4 is observed in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.

A social worker and an auxiliary worker from Kidz Clinic in Boksburg gave a safety talk to the learners of Comet Primary School on May 31 in line with Child Protection Week.

Kidz Clinic social worker Provia Letlalo, said: “Children are a big part of our future, parents, teachers and the society have a role to play in protecting children in every way they can.”

Letlalo shares some of the tips for parents to help their child.

• Having a close relationship with the child will help you see if anything is not right with the child. Get to know your child better.

• Parents must speak to their children about precautions that they need to take, for example: teach children not to go anywhere alone or with strangers.

• Make sure that your child knows their name, your name and people to contact in case of an emergency.

• Pay attention to your child, listen to them and spend enough time with them. Be involved in their lives.

• Never leave your children without adult supervision and make sure that the person can be trusted.

• Educate your children about the dangers they face. Topics such as drug use, alcohol abuse, sex, peer pressure, sexual assault and abduction should be open for discussion.

• Parents should ensure a healthy family environment. Home should be a safe space for the child.

• Children should be taught about the use of social media, cellphones and the internet. Rules to protect them should be put in place. They should be taught about the dangers of the internet.

• Change in personality and attitude could be a sign that something is wrong. Pay attention.

• Children should be taught about responsibilities. Reasonable rules should be put in place.
