Vosloorus team scores big at Mayoral Kings Diski Challenge

The two finalists of the MKDC tournament represents the City of Ekurhuleni at the Gauteng Champ of Champs provincial tournament coordinated by the Gauteng Department of Sports on April 28 at the Nike Centre in Soweto.

The City of Ekurhuleni hosted the three-day Mayoral Kings Diski Challenge (MKDC) soccer tournament between April 19 and 21 at the Vosloorus Stadium.

Blue Lions FC from Vosloorus emerged as the biggest winners when they scooped the coveted prize of R190 000, gold medals and a floating trophy.

The tournament is aimed at leaving a lasting legacy for Ekurhuleni’s aspiring footballers.

The tournament saw eight champions from their respective leagues compete for the record-high prize money.

The attending crowd’s favourites, Blue Lions FC, defeated Iscathulo SkaMadam from Daveyton 2-0 in the final.

Ekurhuleni’s acting mayor, Lesiba Mpya, emphasised the significance of maintaining and constantly improving the quality of the tournament with the aim to attract more aspiring footballers from previously disadvantaged areas to take advantage of this opportunity.

“As the City, we have taken the position to use football, as a familiar sport for all citizens, to promote social cohesion in our communities while encouraging young ones to hone their skills in football with the hope that this tournament will provide a platform for them to be scouted by the big teams,” said Mpya.
