More horror stories emerge from Tambo Memorial Hospital

In one incident, a mother dies 10 days from post-partum haemorrhage after giving birth to her child.

The Advertiser’s story about a young woman whose baby was delivered apparently in three separate parts at Tambo Memorial Hospital has opened a can of worms.

Two women from Delmore Park and Ramaphosa informal settlements have since come forward to raise a concern about alleged negligence at that hospital.

Delmore Park resident Julie Fillis said she won’t find rest until she finds out why her 24-year-old granddaughter died of post-partum haemorrhage.

Nicole Fillis died last year on August 23, just 10 days after giving birth to her son at the hospital.

“She had to leave her baby boy in the hospital because he had breathing problems. On the day she got discharged on August 14, I went to the hospital and Nicole said she was feeling weak and tired,” said Julie.

Julie said twice daily Nicole would go to the hospital to feed her baby and she would sometimes accompany her.

“On August 23, she went alone to the hospital and she fainted while she was in the neonatal ward. I received a call telling me to rush to the hospital as she was taken to the casualty ward.

“In casualty, I was told she is fine. When I found my granddaughter, she told me she was feeling sick.

“She collected her prescribed medicine and we went home in a taxi. At home, things immediately became much worse as she was constantly vomiting.

“By the evening we tried to rush her to the hospital. She died on the way. As a family, we are still shattered by her death.

“Earlier that day, before she died, she was checked by a doctor who said she was fine. When Nicole told nurses that she is bleeding they told her to wash with salt and the bleeding will stop.

“How can they be so careless and why didn’t they observe her thoroughly?”

Julie said the management of the hospital promised to get back to them, but this never happened.

The second woman, Phindile Skhosana from Ramaphosa, claimed that her 10-month-old child died while waiting in the queue.

The child died in the hands of her father after they allegedly repeatedly told nurses that their child needed help fast.

The mother, who also hasn’t found closure regarding the death, said on May 21, 2013, she took her child to the local clinic because he was vomiting uncontrollably and had a runny stomach.

“The nurses checked the child at the clinic. They called the ambulance and we were taken to the hospital.

“While at the hospital, we asked for help and were told to wait in the queue regardless of the condition of the child because of everyone was there to be helped.

“The child died because we were told to wait,” Skhosana said.

The Gauteng Department of Health responded by saying the hospital management is willing to have a redress meeting with Nicole’s family to address all the concerns raised.

The second complaint will be investigated.
