St Dom’s shines at Knight of Champions

The high school team is coached by Allan Donaldson and lead by Katy Knell

The annual Knight of Champions competition, dedicated to former adjudicator Norman Knight, was held at St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls on April 13.

Each year, Knight of Champions heralds the beginning of the Large Drill season, but it is also significant for the large number of old girls and past drummies and cheerleaders who are drawn to the competition in the hope of seeing old friends and, simply, because they cannot let go of the teams they served and grew to love.

The St Dominic’s mini drummies (Grade 0 and Grade One), coached by Shannon Bester (a St Dominic’s old girl drummie), showed everybody how hard work pays off and treated the spectators on Saturday.

There were 21 cheerleading teams competing and 22 drum majorette teams (13 primary school and nine high school teams). St Dominic’s stole the show with both teams (primary and high school) winning the drum majorette section of the Knight of Champions competition.

The next competition will be held at the Rand Show, which will be running between April 19 and 28.

Both teams will be travelling to East London in the last week of June to compete against the best every province has to offer for the title of South African champions.

The next competition hosted by St Dominic’s will be the Provincial Championships, where teams all compete to be the best of the best in Gauteng. Dates are yet to be confirmed.

Also at the event was the South African National Blood Service, which encouraged supporters to donate blood.

The primary school team is coached by Alisha Venter, Jenna-Lee van Niekerk and Matthew Higgs, lead by Asande Nkuna and captained by Karabo Mahlangu.
