Off-duty officer goes beyond the call of duty, arrest suspect at mall

“Criminals are warned that even if they don’t see any SAPS members it does not mean there are none around as we are forever vigilant,” said BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.

An off-duty Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) member, WO Riaan Nel, is being praised for going beyond the call of duty.

Nel was recently exiting the East Rand Mall building, returning to his car in the mall parking lot, when he spotted a man inside a grey Renault Duster acting very suspiciously.

The officer approached the car with a suspicious-looking person inside, and the man jumped out of the driver side of the vehicle and started to run away.

Nel gave chase on foot and with the help of East Rand Mall guards they managed to apprehend the suspect while trying to hide in the bushes behind the Total garage on Rietfontein Road.

The suspect was found with equipment he allegedly admitted he was using to break into a mall customer’s vehicle. He was then detained at Boksburg North SAPS and his vehicle break-in equipment was booked in as an exhibit.

Nel proceeded to trace the owner of the vehicle and it emerged the driver door lock had been forced open. Detectives are investigating a malicious damage to property case.

According to Giblin, the members signalled for the driver to pull over and he stopped near the Snake Road and Tom Jones Street off-ramps, where the officers requested to search the vehicle and its two occupants. It was then found the vehicle was transporting 14 large bags of dagga.

The suspects, aged 32 and 38, were immediately placed under arrest, the dagga confiscated and their vehicle impounded.

Investigation into the origins and destination of the dagga are still underway.
