Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen learner excels at Ekurhuleni Academic Excellence Awards

The award ceremony was held at Alberton Civic Centre at the end of January 24 to award and acknowledge best-performing schools, learners, teachers and graduates who used the City of Ekurhuleni bursary to trail their qualifications in various higher education institutions.

The City of Ekurhuleni hosted the annual Ekurhuleni Academic Excellence Awards to honour those learners and teachers who have worked hard and excelled in the 2018 academic year.

MEC of education Panyaza Lesufi and executive mayor, councillor Mzwandile Masina were among those who attended the ceremony.

The majority of bursaries are awarded to those pursuing academic studies in skills such as in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, technology and accounting.

The City’s bursary has been increased to R100-million to ensure that no learner misses the opportunity to education.

Lesufi encouraged the learners and alumni to make education up-to-the-minute.

“Be the generation that says no to grants, RDP houses and be the one that will study and pay salaries but not the one to get paid remunerations,” said Lesufi.

Best-performing learner in Ekurhuleni for 2018, Tineke Danielle du Plessis, from Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen received an average of 95.6 per cent and seven distinctions.

She received a fully-funded bursary and told the Alberton RECORD that, “It was not easy but with support from family and friends nothing stopped me from achieving everything I wanted to achieve.”

Tineke said in order for the class of 2019 to receive such honour they have to work hard, set goals, have plans to achieve and most important believe in themselves.

“I will be studying chemical engineering at NWU Potchefstroom. Thank you to my family and friends for the support,” said Tineke.

Tylan Du Toit, a graduate and masters student from Boksburg, also a beneficiary of the City of Ekurhuleni bursary, told the RECORD, “It is a privilege that I received the bursary to pursue my qualification and it has changed my life.

“I would like to encourage others to also apply for the bursary because it changes lives and gives you the opportunity to study for what you love.”
