Watch: Security measures urgently needed to prevent cable theft

Residents of Beyers Park, Atlasville, Bardene and Impala Park were again left without electricity since 2am on the morning of January 10, following cable theft near the substation.

Ward 22 councillor Ruhan Robinson said the only solution to curb cable theft near the Witkoppie Substation is to urgently put in place security measures to prevent cable theft.

The Advertiser spoke to Robinson at the site where the cables were stolen in Atlasville Road.

According to Robinson, this has been an ongoing problem as several feeder cables have been stolen since last year at the same site.

“The feeder cables supplying power to Boksburg have been stolen four times since December. Today (January 10) thieves have stolen a 30m long feeder cable, leaving residents in darkness.

“On January 1, residents had a hard knock when they had no power for 60 hours,” he said.

Robinson said he has submitted questions to the MMC of Energy, Water and Waste Services on what measures would be taken to prevent such mishaps, and will also be running a petition on this issue at the Westwood Spar on January 12.

One resident of Bardene, Barend Pretorius, said if this is the trend Boksburg is going to follow regarding cable theft then he and his family must seriously consider moving.

Marlene Currie said they as residents are fed up with the inconvenience caused by the cable theft.

“We want to make it known to Ekurhuleni metro it is not good enough that they do not take the necessary precautions to secure the cables from theft,” said Currie.

“It is not only inconvenient to us as taxpayers, but it must be costing a fortune to replace the cables all of the time.”

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
