CBC Old Boys humble champions Kempton Park

Old Boys’ next fixture is a home one when they welcome Bedfordview in the season’s first round ultimate game on Sunday, December 2.

CBC Old Boys claimed a famous win at the Barnard Stadium when they defeated champions Kempton Park during their Eastern Cricket Premier League clash on November 18.

The hosts failed to close the runs gap during their batting innings to give Old Boys an 11-run victory.

Old Boys opener Mark Pearce, who’s been one of the side’s leading scorers this season, led the way with a brilliant batting performance after the visitors were sent to bat first.

Pearce’s gem of an innings ended on 71 runs, making him the top scorer of the day.

It was a strong start for the visitors who ensured that their best batsmen maximise their innings behind the crease – with second opener Dylan Bennie (6), captain Casey Arnold (32), wicket-keeper Ryno van der Merwe (28) and Pearce combining for 137.

The middle order added the all-important extras to keep the scoreboard working as Arnold and company posted 202 in 48.5 overs.

It could’ve been more for the visitors but Kempton’s bowlers were equal to the task with the triumvirate of Sarel Myburgh, Neels Bergh and Saleem Manual, all taking hat-tricks.

They produced numbers 3/42; 1, 3/27; 1 and 3/28; 2 respectively.

The Old Boys defence also kept the hosts honest and at bay. Arnold completed a complete performance with a hat-trick of his own in the bowling, finishing with 3/43 with teammate Keith Bennie ending with 3/31.

Kempton’s middle order hitter Brandon Harwood finished as his side’s run-getter with 38. His side accumulated a total of 191- close but not close enough to deny the visitors.

It was Old Boys’ second win over the champions this year alone – with their first win coming during the pre-season T20.

However, it was the local side’s first win over the Barnard Stadium XI in the 50 over format since 2016.
