Benoni Northerns triumphs over CBC
The best performance of the day with the willow belonged to Easterns star Grant Thomson, who hit a half-ton.
One of round five’s big matches lived up to expectations as visitors Benoni Northerns took the spoils over CBC Old Boys in their Eastern Premier League match with a two-wicket win on November 4.
Set a target of 205 runs, Northerns reached the mark after 42.2 overs with Stefano di Bartalomeo and WP Myburgh behind the crease.
The chase began in aggressive fashion and it was just what the doctor ordered for the Benoni XI as opener Vaughan Humphrey put 79 on the board. Len Killeen’s 31 and captain Kurt Francis’ 31 also proved decisive.
Francis’ opposite, Casey Arnold, who also reached the 30-run mark with the bat, said: “We did well, we just dropped too many catches in key moments, but a good game to only lose by two wickets.”
Arnold has reason to hold his head up high following a good start to the campaign by his side and with the team showing good form early on despite the latest setback against Northerns.
Fellow stalwart Dylan Bennie, along with himself, helped the hosts reach the 200-run mark with the former finishing on 33 and the skipper on 30.
The Old Boys top order combined for 131, including Mark Pearse’s 16 runs.
A repeat or similar performance coupled with a better contribution from the middle order and tail enders, then the local side will give themselves when they travel to champions Kempton Park this Sunday (November 18).
Devon Botha produced a brilliant bowling performance, finishing with 3/37 including two maidens.
Northerns’ Stefan Jordaan also maximised his bowling overs, finishing with 3/31 including three maidens. – @SabeloBoksburg
