Young man handed two life sentences for rape and murder

An additional eight-year jail term was imposed for kidnapping. The sentences will run concurrently.

The South Gauteng High Court has sentenced 19-year-old Ashley Johnson, of Driehoek, to two life sentences for the rape and murder of 10-year-old Chrisania Carelse, of Ramaphosa, on October 5.

Johnson, who was 18 at the time, kidnapped, raped and murdered the little girl. Her naked body, with stab wounds to the neck and upper legs, was found dumped in the veld next to the ZCC Church, in Elsburg Road, on April 1, last year.

Reiger Park SAPS’ Sgt Mashudu Phathela, Sgt Maxwell Siweya and Const Joy Nthekang, arrested Johnson.

The case was then allocated to Det W/O Ben Olifant, who along with his team members, worked tirelessly since early last year chasing leads.

The accused made several court appearances. He was convicted of the crime on June 20 and sentenced this month.

The Reiger Park team was applauded for being able to secure such good convictions.
